FAQs

How do you work in businesses?

I’m the same as a GM, working with you in your business to implement your strategy. Only I do it as a Fractional GM (part-time for a short period of time) with precision focus on achieving specific outcomes such as preparing the business for its next phase of growth, recalibrating a previously successful business, or getting you ready to bring in an Office/Practice/Operations Manager, or maybe even to sell the business and move on to your next challenge.

What types of businesses do you work with?

I choose to work with small service-based businesses led by visionary business owners. They have an energy and enthusiasm to make the world a better place, its infectious and really lights my fire! I need them, and they need me, it's a match made in visionary-operator heaven.

My experience is based in professional services firms and most service businesses experience the same challenges at different times.

What does it cost?

A fraction of what a full-time GM with over 15 years of experience would. Packages and pricing are scalable to the nature and length of the engagement.

An initial exploratory discussion is at no charge to find out more about each other and the specific situation for your business.

Is this another consulting "short-term fix"?

No. I’m a doer, not a teller. My second greatest love after getting things done is Accountability (with a capital A!). I provide options from supporting and building your in-house implementors through to executing on your plan for you, as well as quarterly sessions to review and reset your operational plan. It's all about outcomes, not overhead.

What are the benefits of Fractional GM vs hiring?

It all comes down to: Why are you thinking of engaging a Manager of any description? Where is the business headed? Do you have the skills needed, either personally or in-house? What can you afford over the next 12 months? What happens if you don’t make any headway towards your strategy? What happens if you don’t correct the declining profit margins/employee engagement/client satisfaction?Let’s talk and find out what the right choice is for you right now.

How can you possibly understand my business properly?

By increasing my question to statement ratio, getting to know you as the visionary leader and working with a maximum of 1-3 businesses at any point in time, and having chalked up 15+ years in this space. I want to know everything there is to know about your business, where the opportunities are, where the challenges are/likely to be, who you work with from clients to team members, what's impacting your business now and into the future. All the way to the root cause.

How long is a typical engagement?

What are we trying to achieve? If it's an Operational Review we can be done in a few weeks, a Fractional GM or Project Engagement typically lasts for around 3 months, while supporting an in-house team/owner can be an ongoing process with regular check-ins and quarterly resets for one quarter or for as long as needed.

Where do you work?

I'm lucky enough to call Toowoomba, Queensland home and love it here. I can work in real life in Toowoomba, in a hybrid scenario from my home office and your office in Brisbane and South East Queensland, and remotely across Australia.

Hello,

I'm Jen Ryder.

I work with visionary small business owners because they can’t stand still either.

Where others see roadblocks, they see the destination.

Sometimes their energy, capacity, drive, and enthusiasm get them to a place where they're doing everything and nothing all at once.

They need help from a trusty navigator and co-pilot to get them out of their operational nightmare, and sometimes their own way, and back on the road to great things.

I started Operational Alchemy to be that navigator and co-pilot by providing access to support and expertise for small businesses, without the ongoing overhead when they least need it. I get in, get it sorted, and get out of the way. All while building your in-house bench to keep the magic alive.

For more than 15 years, I've had the privilege of working alongside remarkable business owners and leaders as a General Manager, Operations Manager and COO to free them from operations to focus on the growth or sale of the business, or sometimes their first love: their client work.

Let’s transform your small business operations so you can make magic happen.
